Canelo Alvarez vs William Scull on May 3, 2025

Canelo vs Scull poster

English audio above. Arabic audio below.

William Scull is a scrappy fighter of Cuban descent who has sudden bursts of speed that help him edge out a victory in 23 fights. He’s relatively unknown. Even with that, he has managed to climb the world rankings and become champion by defeating Vladimir Shishkin through a controversial decision. He’s a little hard to read because he has sloppy movements at times and yet refined movements at other times. He would fake a punch and jab and put his hands down as if he were asking to get hit. He appears to be a slick fighter but is easy to hit, just as it happened against Shishkin. In layman's terms, he’s very inconsistent.

Scull is not a bad fighter, but not a great one either. Canelo will easily beat him within five rounds if he fights like he did against Shishkin, who actually beat him and hurt him more often than he hurt him. It would be a better matchup if it were Shishkin fighting Canelo. Since he doesn’t have much power, he has to rely on movement and defense to keep Canelo at bay because Canelo is at his best when he is advancing and mixing his punches. Canelo is excellent at cutting off the ring. He has to get past the onslaught of punches heading his way.

Canelo is one of the best active fighters in this generation. He is well-known around the world, with millions of fans who adore him. He’s a Mexican icon who needs no introduction. I can’t imagine a world in which he doesn’t defeat Scull. He would have to be totally out of his element to come out short of a knockout victory. It’s not his fault that his opponent is not as skilled as fans would want him to be. When Canelo defeats Scull, he will once again become the undisputed super middleweight champion, setting a possible matchup with Terrence Crawford closer to reality.

At 34 years of age, Canelo’s career may be winding down, as he has made it public that he may retire after his four-fight Riyadh season deal comes to an end. This shows that he is seriously considering putting down the gloves, but we never know. He may just be running out of opponents.

William Scull will try to move slickly but will find it harder to do, considering how well Canelo anticipates an opponent’s movement. He can’t overpower him, so he’s forced to run constantly to avoid getting hit with a hook. From his fight with Shishkin, he appeared to be easily wobbled by a single hard punch, losing his balance at least three times. This cannot happen with Canelo, who will continue to attack upon seeing him hurt.

Canelo wins by way of knockout within 6 rounds.
